Which I know, I’ve said is a sign of bad acting above, I stand by that. Stephen Dillane and Vicky McClure are Alex’s connection to MI6 and at the time of watching, I thought they were rather forgettable to be honest. As we begin to see his insanity, the acting itself begins to make more sense and we feel our skin crawl in the same way that Alexs’ also is! Which I think is a sign of terrible acting, but as the season progressed and he was able to change his acting based on what the audience became aware of, I started to feel slightly uncomfortable. Nihat Haluk Bilginer played the villainous Doctor Grief this season and to begin with, I didn’t really have much of an opinion of him be that positive or negative. (Which I of course just accepted as true in my pre-teens when reading them!) Rather than when I decided to re-read the books after the show and found myself wondering how a 14 year old could do the stuff described. I thought he did a good job at selling to us his skills and how he could be used by an outfit such as MI6 and that in a way, it was actually able to make sense. I had a good time watching the show and found Farrant to be more believable as Alex than when Alex Pettyfer played him in the film. In terms of both action and the themes as a whole. Through this investigation, it leads him to discover that his uncle was actually a member of MI6 (British Spies), and that everything his uncle did with him while growing up such as learning languages, karate, driving and everything in between was in preparation for Alex to also become a spy at some point in the future. The show takes place a bit different from the books themselves (But not in a negative way), with Stormbreaker being forgotten about / removed from Canon and instead the book that deals with Point Blanc is the focus of the tv show and it follows the plan for the book itself pretty much by the letter. The show has been well-received by fans and overall, they are quite content with what the show gave us, especially considering the sub-par film, but what about in-depth, what did the show do well and is there anything that can be improved upon?
